Blemish
It's been a trying time for the former Mr David Batt. Following protracted wranglings with a major label he's finally emerged from the legal jungle with head held high and bearing this, the first of his creative trophies from a plethora of ongoing projects. Described as 'an impromptu suite of songs for guitar, electronics and voice', Blemish is initially only available via the internet, yet those who have longed for some forward motion in Sylvian's career of late would do well to hunt this down immediately.
Mainly improvised solo, excepting three tracks with free jazz guitar icon Derek Bailey and one with electronica guru Christian Fennesz, Blemish is delineated from the rest of David's work to date by two points. Firstly: his singular extemporised recording process has freed him from any previous sense of precious perfectionism. This is a record that burbles, clicks and buzzes with, well, blemishes, and thus seems more approachable than his most recent work. Secondly: the voice, while retaining the sub-Ferry vibrato, is closely mic'ed; intimately double tracked for harmonies; and, most importantly, his lyrics seem remarkably honest.

I am getting sick and tired of buying albums of top established artists
of which you can't wait to listen to for a refreshing change from new
pop drivel only to find you bought another artist self satisfying his
ambitions in music rather than giving us what the paying fan wants
"good songs",this is like a collection of bad b-sides.Sylvian's albums
on the whole are fantastic but this is as bad as "rain tree crow" but
at least he had the excuse of they ran out of money.Definitely a miss.

David Sylvian IS and always will be my No1 pop idol. How could anybody
not like this cd. it is intimate, strong and lyrically challenging.

It's been a long time coming but here we have something as compelling
as 'Beehive' from the first listen - proof as if we needed it that the
Fripp period was (with honourable exceptions) a lengthy blip. Like many
of the reviewers here, I agree the guitar tracks are just too grating
and break up the flow, compared to the seamless beauty of 'Beehive' - I
confess I skip these tracks more often than not (heresy?). I hope its
not - but if this is the result of some middle-age trauma it's worth
the pain!

I made the journey to London to see the fire in the forrest show and I
was pleasently shocked and in awe of Davids recent material. Truly
ground breaking, and I really admire D.S.for having the guts to go it
alone with material that was written in such a short space of time ( 8
weeks )I think. As always a plethora of sound that makes you go back
for more and only reveals its quality after repeated hearings.

if "secrets of the beehive" seems to be the proclamation of an
aesthetic/philosophical aim, then "dead bees on a cake" would be the
culmination of this aim and "blemish" is the definition of the new aim,
a re-invention of the self. prometheus spreads his wings once more...

David Sylvian is such an inspiration. At what point will he get the
recognition he deserves? What on earth does he have to do after
'beehive','brillant trees' and now 'blemish'? Perhaps if Nick Drake
hadn't died his music would be similiarly swept to one corner. ?

the album started of slow and in the middle almost came to an ault but
in the end i must say i was glad it finished.everything and nothing was
a rip of from past and present this album sounds as though some bloke
made a bodge up of a recording in his bedroom but then again well done
david if anyone can pull it of you can

how come Dave hasn't staged in Poland yet (or at least that long)? with
such a fervent and musically emphatic non-pop audience here he'd be
greatly appreciated. Blemish's a brave step forwards.

sophisticated and elegant, perhaps his best album. it grows on you
physically and intellectually. I have been his fan since Japan and DS
has never disappointed me. the rest of the world can listen to Franz
Ferdinand, radiohead and all that insignificant crap.
